Here’s what I had to say in my keynote at regen·era rising, the Design Science Studio’s week-long launch event.

I’m coming to you from Metro Manila, Philippines. It’s morning here.

The City of Manila was “officially” founded as a Spanish city on 24th June 1571, by Spanish conquistador Miguel López de Legazpi. This is regarded as the city’s official founding date even though a Tagalog-fortified polity called Maynilà had already existed on the site, dating back as far as 1258.
And with that founding by Legazpi, the world’s first global cities were born: Manila, Madrid and Acapulco.

The Manila Galleons were Spanish trading sea ships which operated for 250 years linking the Spanish Captaincy General of the Philippines with Mexico across the Pacific Ocean, making one or two round-trip voyages per year between the ports of Acapulco and Manila.

Colonial powers present in the history of the City of Manila include China, Spain, Britain, Japan, and the United States of America.
